Helping and coaching people is one of the things I like most.

Time to meet Johan Hallez, [Expert Hub Lead Agile Project Management]

Have you always been interested in project management?

Not always, but my interest started early in my career—long before my time at Skyline. I began as an electronics engineer, working on various projects for different organizations. As our team grew, I took on more planning responsibilities and eventually became a team lead. I loved it because it was the first time I really got into planning and management.

When our team expanded further and we landed bigger projects, a real project manager was assigned to one of them. I was immediately envious of her approach—she managed projects in a way I had never seen before. We knew exactly what needed to be done and by when. From there, my passion grew, and I transitioned from hands-on engineering into project management—eventually coaching others in their own project management efforts.

What’s your go-to productivity hack?

There are tons of frameworks and hacks out there, but I think it all starts with building good habits. It’s so easy to get sidetracked—yesterday’s emails, a quick chat with a colleague in the morning, and just as you sit down at your desk, a Teams message pops up. Constant context switching slows you down because every time you return to your original task, you need time to refocus. That’s why I reserve dedicated time in my schedule for emails, backlog refinement, and handling unexpected tasks throughout the day. It helps me stay focused and work more efficiently. But hey, no system is perfect—at least, none that I’ve found so far.

What’s the most memorable Skyline event you’ve ever attended, and why?

When you’ve been part of a company like Skyline for over 15 years—where events are such a big part of the culture—you’ve pretty much seen it all. But for me, the most memorable moments are always the conversations and the laughs with colleagues

That said, one event that really stands out was my first-ever DataMiner-focused event. I hadn’t even started working at Skyline yet, but I was invited anyway. I remember walking into this massive event space, packed with people, and then suddenly, [our CEO] Ben stepped on stage. The way he spoke—with so much passion and energy—was incredible. I was in awe. And honestly, I still am every time I see him on stage.

If you could travel back in time to any era, when would it be and what would you do?

I’d hop in my DeLorean and head straight to Albert Einstein’s house. I truly think he’s one of the greatest minds in recent history—his theories still hold up today. He struggled in school, faced skepticism from established scientists, and yet, he became one of the most influential thinkers of all time. It’s crazy to think about. So, if I could, I’d land myself an internship at his side and I’d ask him the big question: "What the hell is going on in your mind?"

What’s a surprising fact about you that most people wouldn’t guess?

My background is in electronics, and that passion has never left me. In my spare time, I still work on personal projects, experimenting with new technologies and microcontrollers. It’s my way of staying connected to the field and keeping my skills sharp.
